Zenith continues to explore the heritage and symbolism of the Mayan civilization with the DEFY Skyline Maya Edition II.
Limited to 13 pieces—a number chosen for its special significance in Mayan cosmology—the figure 13 held an important place in their conception of time and the universe. The Mayan ritual calendar was organized around cycles linked to 13 numbers, while certain traditions described 13 celestial levels. The case back bears the inscription "ONE OF 13," identifying each watch as part of this 13-piece series.
With its architectural lines and unmistakable silhouette, the DEFY Skyline serves as a contemporary interpretation of the spirit of the original DEFY wristwatches. Its 41 mm faceted stainless steel case combines robustness with geometric precision, housing the El Primero 3620 SK automatic manufacture caliber—a testament to Zenith’s expertise in high-frequency movements.
For the DEFY Skyline Maya Edition II, Zenith reinterprets these design codes through a composition created specifically for this edition. The blue dial features hour markers inspired by the Mayan numeral system, providing an immediate visual reference to the civilization that serves as the watch’s inspiration. At 6 o’clock, the tenth-of-a-second subdial offers a dynamic expression of the high-frequency performance of the El Primero 3620 SK movement.
Blue: Between the Heavens and the Sacred
The color blue plays a central role in the identity of the DEFY Skyline Maya Edition II. In Mayan culture, this color was associated with water, the sky, and various ritualistic and religious contexts, forging a connection between the earthly realm and the sacred sphere.
In this new edition, Zenith translates this theme into a blue dial, accented by hour markers rendered in the Mayan numeral system. The watch comes with an integrated stainless steel bracelet, as well as an additional blue rubber strap, allowing for a sportier look.
Zenith’s relationship with Mexico dates back to the early 20th century. At a time when timekeeping precision played a crucial role in the development of railway networks, ZENITH watches were linked to railway companies in various countries—including the Mexican Railways.
