Witches, vampires, superheroes, and other movie characters can be part of Halloween, but if your celebration begins with a flight, there are some costume elements that are best left for after you land.
For those traveling through Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) this season, choosing the right outfit, packing, and preparing for security can make the difference between a smooth trip and an unexpected inspection.
While it's common to see children traveling in their favorite costumes, for adults, one of the most practical alternatives is to pack their outfit and complete their transformation upon arrival. With a few simple tips, you can avoid mishaps and ensure that the only scares are part of the celebration.
- Save your mask for after the flight. Identity verification systems and biometric technologies used in airports need to correctly recognize each passenger's face.
To avoid delays, it's best to travel with your face uncovered and leave the complete transformation for when you reach your destination. This way, you can get through ID checks more easily without having to compromise your costume.
- Be careful with accessories that look like weapons. That prop knife, the devil's trident, or the accessory inspired by your favorite horror movie might perfectly complete your costume, but it can't necessarily accompany you through security. Items that resemble weapons, explosives, or incendiary devices can trigger searches and may even be prohibited in carry-on luggage, even if they are replicas or toys.
One example is Lucille, the famous barbed wire-covered baseball bat from The Walking Dead, a replica of which is not allowed through security.
- Horror makeup can wait. Transforming into a zombie, a skull, or a movie character may require several layers of makeup, special effects, and prosthetics. However, when these elements significantly alter your facial features, they can also complicate identity verification. Ideally, travel with light makeup and apply the more elaborate effects after landing. If you're carrying liquids, gels, or aerosols in your carry-on baggage, be sure to comply with the applicable security restrictions.
